Perfect Sunday inspiration...

Thanks for this, and all of your other excellent work. Just a couple of curiosities, for me. What raga would you say is closest to the double harmonic major, the aka the arabic scale or gypsy scale? Also, I've always wondered what raga inspired "Within You Without You". I once read that George Harrison had been listening to Ravi Shankar and was inspired by what he heard to create the song. Although like many stories from Rock and Roll, that could just be popular folklore. I'm thinking that it has a Jog flavour. But I know basically nothing!! (Hope to see you this summer in Glastonbury at some point. If you get the chance to bless us with you beautiful guitar accompaniment. I let you know who I am, if we meet again!!)

Quick note, the video for Tender Surrender is a music video. Not a live performance. You can see several instances of his fingers not matching what's heard, including the fade between Evo, his main Ibanez Jem for the solo section, and the green meanie Strat he uses for the cleaner intro and outro. He talks about that shift in the bonus features of Where the Wild Things Are DVD. Still. An awesome studio recording, an awesome music video, and as always an amazing case of showmanship from Vai. Off stage Steve Vai is just a guy. No performative vibe, no rock star persona. Just a dude. Not kidding. If any of the rest of us could play half as well, we'd have trouble fitting our skulls through a door for all the ego we'd carry around with us.

Normally I don’t listen to a ton of reactions but after watching you…I would very much value any opinion or thought you might share. The classic rock blues combination of SRV. He’s my favorite for many reasons but I want to hear what you think. I’m sure you’ve been asked already. It would be Stevie Ray Vaughan live at El Macombo. The song is called Texas flood. John Mayer is a pretty good guitar player as well and he said once he saw Texas flood and SRV he was floored. I must agree. I stood next to his statue in Austin Texas and got a picture last year he would play for anyone anywhere.

vai's no joke. he graduated with a degree in music from Berklee in boston and transcribed for zappa and toured with the best in Zappa's band before he went to roth and whitesnake, then on his own. he won't just talk rock or music with you. he'll talk serious theory.

That opening lick/theme is an ear worm

The expressionism in his performance is very primal. The song is "tender surrender", a song clearly very sensual, very sexual, very primal. Why should his performance be anything less than exactly that? "For the love of god" is another very well written composition of his which has a vastly different performative expression. As a content creator, writer and lover of music, I'm of the mind that every performance should be befitting of the song and emotion brought forth in it, making each song and performance unique unto itself.

Awesome analyses and reaction! Now how about his first teacher Satriani? "Made of tears" live comes to mind. So much going on in that song to. Satch took a 4.30 min song and streched it to almost 10 min in the live version. Would love to hear a guitarist take on that performance and the techniques used. Keep up the good work!!

I hate to break it to ya, but this is the music video, not a live performance. He's mimicking his guitar part, you're hearing the album track. That's not taking away anything from Steve, he's my favorite guitar player. Period. In a genuine live performance, he feels it just as hard, with less hair touching 😊

I always use Fast Fret, have done for years, however, since the last year or so, I've stopped buying it since the container went from metal to plastic! WHY?? Cost saving and yet, put the price up! Luckily I bought 10 (1 in each case) before it went plastic!
